Seedling-Type Our seedling-type hazelnuts are available for purchase on a first-come, first-served basis as quantities and availability allow. There are no restrictions on who can buy the plants. Currently, we only offer plants that are ready in the fall. Because they still have the leaves on when they are ready, we do not ship the plants. Too many things can go wrong during transit. As such, plants for the fall are only available for pick-up at the nursery in Bayfield, WI unless you make shipping arrangements directly with the nursery. We are working with partners to offer pick-up locations in the Upper Midwest.
Cultivars Our 1st Generation cultivars are handled a bit differently. Plant availability is very limited right now as we wait for our nurseries to ramp up production. To help shepherd development of a sustainable industry and avoid the "boom and bust" common to new crops, we are being strategic in how initial plants are made available. Download the UMHDI Availability Plan for full details. Although the UMHDI cultivars have gone through two evaluation cycles, they have not yet been grown at scale. To manage the risk of initial deployment we are first populating a network of Go-First Hazelnut Farms. Then, plants will go to our Early Adopter Commercial Partners to help clusters of networked growers. Then, plants will go to Go-First Growers, who are individual growers within 25 miles of a Go-First Farm. Once those orders have been filled, plants will be available to purchase on a first come, first served basis starting October 1 for spring-delivered plants and February 1 for fall-delivered plants. In summary, the current options to purchase UMHDI cultivars are: 1. Join and order through an Early-Adopter Commercial Partner organization. 2. Apply to be a Go-First Grower (must be located within 25 miles of a Go-First Farm). 3. Get on our wait list to be notified when online ordering opens.
