The UMHDI's hazelnuts are hybrids between C. americana and C. avellana. They have been selected based on consistently high yields, flavor, and kernel quality. Arb 7-1 was identified at the U of MN Landscape Arboretum. It is proven hardy to zone 3. EFB resistance is unknown, but it has been grown at more than 20 locations and has never had EFB. Expect nuts in the 2nd or 3rd year after planting. Yields are high and kernel size is average (0.5 grams) for Midwest hybrid hazelnuts. 38% kernel by weight, 15mm average in-shell size, 10mm average kernel size. Grows as a compact shrub with moderate suckering. Requires full sun. Recommended pollinators are Rose 9-2 and Stap N7-6.

Eric 4-21 is a hybrid hazelnut identified at a farm near Lake City, MN. It is the most consistent producer of the Origin Series cultivars. It is hardy to zone 3 and no EFB has been observed at all the locations it’s been grown. The in-shell nuts are relatively large, but percent kernel is relatively low at 32%. The nut clusters are very distinctive with large leafy husks. Stems can bend to the ground in especially high-yield years. Flavor is excellent. Kernel shape is somewhat oblong.

Rose 9-2 is a hybrid with unknown parentage and was identified at a research planting in Rosemount, MN. It is hardy to zone 3 with no observed EFB at any location at which it’s been grown. It grows as a compact shrub with moderate suckering. Rose 9-2 has the thinnest shells of the Origins Series cultivars with an average percent kernel of 42%. Average kernel weight is 0.6g with an average size of 10-11mm. The Rose 9-2 kernel has a fair amount of fiber that comes off with roasting or blanching.

Price W41 is the quintessential Midwest-grown hybrid hazelnut. It grows as a compact shrub with moderate suckering. Yields are high and kernels average 0.6g and 10mm in diameter. Percent kernel is good at 38%. Kernel quality is high and flavor is excellent. It is winter hardy to zone 3 and has had no EFB in all the locations it’s been grown. Discovered on a farm near Northfield, MN.

Stap N7-6 is a hybrid hazelnut identified at a research planting near Staples, MN. Nut size tends to be large for Midwest hazelnuts but variable. Average kernel weight is 0.5g and kernel size is 10-11mm. Flavor is excellent. It grows as a compact shrub but does sucker extensively. Recommended for a hedgerow system or grown with periodic mowing to maintain a 12-18” plant width.
